What It’s Like To Work In Retail At Christmas – Blogmas Day Sixteen

Recently I have seen a lot of tweets around lately that have been telling people to be kind to retail workers over the Christmas period. I, as a retail worker myself, appreciate that so much! I just wanted to give you a little peek into what it’s like to work in retail at Christmas, and I’m sure some of you can relate!

You Get Tired Of Christmas Music

Now, as much as I love all of the Christmas Carols, songs and in general all music, when you’ve been listening to Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree and Holly Jolly Christmas on loop for 40 hours a week, it can kind of mess with your mind. And the enjoyment of them on actual Christmas Day. Especially when it begins November 1st. NOVEMBER. I can’t even begin to think of Christmas until December.

You’re Always Freezing

I don’t know about any of you, but when I’m in work, I am always freezing at Christmas time. Where I work tends to have an open door policy, so I have to stand with 3 degree wind coming in the door ALL winter. It’s not fun. Sometimes I’ll wear my coat at work because I can’t bear to take it off. You gotta do what you gotta do.

You Get Annoyed with Customers

I always try to keep my cool around Christmas, but ultimately there will get to a point (around now, in the middle of December) where people are so stressed out and running around getting gifts for people that they can become rude and quite frankly annoying. (Even if they think they’re being funny.) If an item is not priced, it doesn’t mean it’s free. I can’t give you ‘a little discount’ because I don’t have the authority to. At 3:30pm on Christmas Eve, no, I don’t have that lovely coat you saw three weeks ago in stock. I know these things seem minor, but when you have quite a big volume of people doing these little things, it can get tiresome. Not to mention those who hang around after 5:30pm, stopping you from leaving, but then leave without taking anything.

The Mess

One minute, you’ve just finished fixing through all of the clothes and displays, and they look beautiful. The next, the hurricane has hit and there are 3 tops on the floor, 15 items hanging in the changing rooms, a random coffee cup sitting on the floor (in the corner out of the way) or worse, someone has thrown chewing gum on the floor and you step in it. Not to mention, glitter everywhere (even in places you never thought it could be).

Yes, you read that right. Ugh, I don’t mean to sound like a pain, and I know having kids can be tough… but it’s not my job to make sure your kid doesn’t run around yelling, screaming and crying. (Or messing up my just tidied shop *sigh*) So, next time it happens, don’t look at me, because I think this one is firmly in your lane.

Working in retail at Christmas is also one of the best things in the world. You get to help people pick out gifts for the ones they love. You get to wish everyone a Merry Christmas, and they wish the same to you. You get to see the smile of their faces when they try on piece of clothing and you tell them that it looks good on them and you help give them that confidence boost they need. Sure it can be annoying sometimes, but it’s just a lovely mood when it’s a good day and that far outweighs the negatives.

I’ll be back every day during December to bring you a post, so don’t forget to come back! Don’t be a stranger! Also, Day Five was a £25 Amazon Gift Card Giveaway! If you want to enter the link to that post is down below!
